After 10 successful years in existence, the C/O Berlin Talents program for emerging photographers and art critics is being restructured. In the future, an international jury will choose the recipient of the Talent of the Year award on an annual basis, thus highlighting one selected artistic position per year. By providing the winner with a comprehensive solo exhibition and accompanying catalog published by Kehrer, the Talents program will take on a more significant place in the C/O Berlin exhibition program. Depending on the artistic work being shown, exhibitions may be installed throughout all the exhibition spaces in the Amerika Haus and will no longer be limited to a specific part of the building.
The C/O Berlin Talents program, unique in Europe, invites photographers up to the age of 35 to submit a representative series of their work for consideration. A jury of international experts will assess the works submitted and choose the winner of the Talent of the Year award. The deadline for submissions is Friday, March 3, 2017. Talents is an annual international competition. For many young photographers, it has been the springboard to exhibitions worldwide at venues including the Goethe-Institutes in Paris, Madrid, Washington, and Mexico City.
In 2017, the theme of the Talents series will be New Documentary Photography. The documentation of social, political, artistic, and everyday situations has always had a close relationship to the medium of photography. In recent years, new digital technologies and an endless flood of images have opened up altogether new possibilities as well as challenges. How are photographers dealing with this? What new forms of documentation are they developing, and what themes are they exploring? How are new digital technologies affecting the way stories are told? How are conventional narrative strategies being expanded through the inclusion of moving images, audio, and video? C/O Berlin is curious about new developments in documentary photography and is searching for the Talent of the Years.
Supporting emerging artists and offering them a stepping stone to their future: Talents is a creative campus for young international contemporary photography and art criticism. Since 2006, the C/O Berlin Foundation has been supporting emerging photographers and art critics who have completed their education and are embarking on a career. Up to now, the Talents program has featured 80 young photographers and art critics with solo exhibitions and accompanying publications, thus introducing them to a broader public, as Andy Spyra, Ann-Christin Bertrand, Florian Ebner, Maria Schindelegger, Sebastian Stumpf, Stephen Wadell or Tobias Zielony.
How do I apply?
Photographers may apply by sending up to 15 samples of their work in printed form. Maximum size: DIN A4; no originals. A short project description must be submitted with the photographs, and an online form must be completed on the C/O Berlin website. There is a submission fee of 40 euros for processing.
Art critics are welcome to apply at any time of year free of charge by submitting samples of their work. Submissions may include published texts as well as texts that have been written for future publications.
