Whether showing September 11, 2001, in New York, starvation in India, the Shah of Iran or Muhammad Ali, the photographs of Thomas Hoepker affect the viewer through their empathetic visual language. Although many of these pictures were taken in politically troubled regions scarred by war and hardship, the viewer is not overwhelmed by shock photos but allowed to experience the people’s situation in a deeply moving way.

Thomas Hoepker always sees his role as that of a commission photographer; he works in a documentary style and emphasizes the importance of photography’s authenticity and its function of bearing witness. Many of his pictures and photo reports possess a timeless quality despite the fact that they were created for up-to-the-minute daily or weekly news media.
