Lecture 02 . Akram Zaatari . Walid Raad

Mapping Sitting

The starting point for C/O Lectures 02 was reservations about conventional ways of displaying photographs in galleries and museums – framed and behind glass. Akram Zaatari and Walid Raad, artists and joint founders of the Fondation Arabe pour l’Image (FAI) Beirut, try to free Middle Eastern photography from its commercial context.

Their photo installation Mapping Sitting is a psycho-social space for remembering, in which the recent history of the Middle East from the 1920s to the 1970s is reflected in portraits. The installation reveals the opportunities for, and challenge of, making artefacts of everyday culture accessible to a wide audience.
