In their prize-winning projects, Laura Huertas Millán (b. 1983, Colombia) and Sarker Protick (b. 1986, Bangladesh) explore from different perspectives and geographical contexts how colonial structures continue to shape our contemporary relationship to nature today. The filmmaker Laura Huertas Millán explores the cultural, medicinal, and ritual uses of the coca plant, using fiction as a strategy to deconstruct colonial narratives. The photographer Sarker Protick examines the extensive changes imposed by humans by coal mining on the Indian subcontinent. His work transfers the examination of the colonial history of Bengal to a photographic study of the present and sheds light on the impact of imperialism on the climate crisis.
Join Katharina Täschner on the Curator’s Tour and gain an in-depth insight into both projects as well as the conception of the double exhibition as part of the After Nature . Ulrike Crespo Photography Prize 24.
