Feminist discourse and the critical examination of mass media form the starting points of the oeuvre of Austrian action and media artist VALIE EXPORT (*1940). Now celebrated as an icon of feminist art, the filmmaker, performance and media artist became known for her sensational street actions in the late 1960s. Her groundbreaking performances, such as Aus der Mappe der Hundigkeit and TAPP und TASTKINO, were seen as protest and provocation and were controversially perceived in conservative Vienna. Her various versions of the Aktionshose: Genitalpanik carried a deep symbolic meaning. They inspired generations of female artists to re-enact their performances.
In a joint Artist Talk with VALIE EXPORT, guest curator Walter Moser (ALBERTINA, Vienna) traces the artistic journey of the feminist pioneer through an art world dominated by men. Special focus will be placed on the relevance of pain and self-harm for her actions, the late recognition in the art world and the role of concept photography as a tool to thematize the body and support feminist causes.
